Realization/ Conversion of the City Cinema | Foyer and restaurant, Künstlerhaus Vienna
The architectural-urbanistic concept for this communal cinema approaches the Stadtkino foyer as a distinctly public space; this also in the sense of gestures of “going in”, not least through the “drawing in” from the street, the exemplary form of transitory urbanity, into the foyer; and also through the “putting out” of parts of the foyer in the form of a bar garden into a previously dead corner.
At the same time, the conversion created a new feeling of height and of expanse, as the ceiling height when entering the foyer got doubled and the space of waiting for the movie start was emptied – a space open to changing images and content. However, entering and passing through does not mean passing through quickly, but rather a zone of waiting, whereby niches open up in unexpected places and anything possible can happen in an open space. Not least for this reason, as the architect/film/cultural theorist Siegfried Kracauer already knew, waiting is fundamentally close to the film experience.
